Traditionally, we approach the deltopectoral intervals, so no muscles are cut there.
Some surgeons will release a little bit of your pectoralis major tendon or a little bit of a release or not. Sometimes, the main tendon or muscle we cut is the subscapularis, the front of the rotator cuff. We cut that, open it up, and then return it when we finish the replacement.
There is a technique that I have started doing, which is subscapularis sparing, where you don’t cut the subscapularis. You don’t cut the muscle. It’s done with a certain type of shoulder replacement in anatomic. It’s got to be in the right patient, but we have started doing that this year, which is just one more thing we can do to accelerate your recovery and speed up how quickly you can use your arm.
