What Happens to Scar Tissue After Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

When we’re doing shoulder replacements, if someone’s already had surgery or sometimes you have some shoulder contractures, we release all that, all that scar, all that tightness to get the shoulder moving. Then, you need a scar to form after the surgery to get everything to heal.

But the goal is to get the joint and everything gliding and moving. When the scar does form, it doesn’t overtighten the joint. So, we excise a scar that’s in there pre-operatively to get everything moving.

Post-operatively, we need a scar. Take your incision, for instance. If you don’t scar that down, then your body’s open. So you have to form a scar after surgery.

We just don’t want excessive amounts that lock everything down. We want to get everything gliding so that when it does scar down, it’s nice, loose, supple scar tissue that allows for a functional joint.
