What is the Best Exercise for Shoulder Replacement?

If patients just want to do a really simple home program, the core exercise that I give them is one where you link your hands together and then come to the top of your head. That’s it.

We do that immediately after surgery, on the first day. We want you to start doing this. You can get to the top of your head at 90 degrees. Let’s say I had surgery on my left shoulder. Now, my right shoulder and my right hand are my therapist. But I’m still actively using my left shoulder a little bit. It’s just assisted.

Over time, once people can put their arms above their heads easily, we say lift their arms. And if you look and see when you do that, what happens if you take away the other side? Well, now you can fully elevate your arm, which people need. To be able to lift their arm without pain smoothly is what 99% of our patients look for when their shoulder is replaced. If we can achieve that simple goal, they do. Amazing. So I love this right here, and that’s my number one move.
