What Are The Neurologic Complications After Total Shoulder Arthroplasty?

They’re incredibly rare, at least in my practice. It’s way less than 1%.

But I’ve never had an actual nerve injury or seen one. I’ve seen one of the patients who referred me to outside surgeons. I have seen carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel-type things where you get swelling down the arm, which puts some pressure on those nerves.

It almost always recovers, though probably 96, 97% of the patients. If you wait a couple of months, that tingling in their hand disappears. But it’s really from something that was there before surgery that has then been set off by having a lot of swelling down the arm from the operation itself. But the good news is we don’t see much of it, and when we do, it goes away.
