I would say which one’s better and how are they different.
Both Total Shoulder Replacement and Reverse Shoulder Replacement are excellent surgeries with excellent outcomes if done by a specialist who does a lot. For me, a lot is typically the data, saying 50. I would say nowadays, even pushing like 100 a year, as high-volume surgeons do, we do 250 a year. They’re both awesome operations with amazing outcomes if done correctly for the right patient and problem.
Both of those surgeries have different indications. It’s a bit controversial, but it’s a bit of a moving target on who gets which one. Even within the shoulder society, like all the top shoulder surgeons in the world who do nothing but shoulder surgery, it’s not like one is worse or better. I tell patients just trying to pick the right golf club for the right shot that, if done correctly, for the right diagnosis, both are phenomenal surgeries.
