Is Physical Therapy Necessary After Shoulder Replacement?

It may surprise you that I don’t think formal therapy is necessary. However, I do believe that it helps patients get better faster and have less pain after surgery because of the guidance that the therapist gives them as they’re recovering.

Every human being is unique in terms of how they recover from surgery. There’s a pretty wide range of how people feel. Having that therapist there coaching you along as you can do more and more teaches you how to get through the day and do your exercises. It’s going to decrease your pain after surgery and accelerate your recovery.

I believe those two things without a shadow of a doubt. But do you have to go? No.

We can give you some home exercises to do on your own. For very disciplined and incredibly motivated people, that can work for them, and they can have a great outcome. But in general, I think it benefits most patients to have that person there as a guide as they recover.
