How Long is Rehab After Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

How Long is Rehab After Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

It varies from patient to patient, but most time, I recommend working with a therapist for about four months after surgery.

For the first couple of months, you’re just working on gentle motion stretching and things like that. After a couple of months, we start to do gentle strengthening. After three months, we remove all restrictions so you can return to your life.

I really like patients staying with the therapist there because they can help with that transition. When you look at what you are doing in your life, how can you do this safely so that you’re not doing too much, too fast, and you’re also getting back as fast as you can?

We don’t want to hold people back, but we also don’t want to go too fast. It’s a balancing game. It’s different for each person. Every person is unique in how they heal and recover from shoulder surgery.

I like to have the therapist involved for at least four months, and some patients want to go a little bit longer because they feel like it really benefits them. So I’ve had patients stay on for six months or even longer because they keep getting stronger, and they love having that relationship with their therapist. So, in general, I recommend about four months.
