This is a variable question. I think that you’ll probably stay about the same weight.
Some patients worry they’ll gain weight because they can’t exercise. I don’t think you’ll lose much. I encourage patients to work their other arms to keep that muscle and work their legs so they don’t lose much muscle mass.
When you think about how much muscle you would lose in that arm, maybe a pound or two tops. In terms of gaining weight, I also encourage everyone who has surgery to exercise every day after surgery to decrease stress, improve overall health and well-being, decrease pain, and speed up the body’s healing capacity.
I don’t think you should gain or lose weight after shoulder surgery. You should stay about the same.
